Eight Big Ys have been completed in the last two months:
1) a new Big Y for the I-A11372 Jewish branch, he belongs to the more specific I-A13654 branch
2) I-Y4460 has a new branch called I-Y70430. It contains one man with Pontic Greek ancestry and one man with Belarus ancestry.
3-5) There are 3 new Big Ys that are Y3118+ and have no further shared SNPs. There are now 10 branches immediately below I-Y3118, only two branches have SNP names and 8 branches are I-Y3118*. The new Big Ys have ancestry from western Russia and Belarus, I-Y3118 is typical of northeastern Europe.
6) I-Y3118 has a new branch called I-A21812 (part of I-A13916). The two known members have ancestry from Ukraine and Kazakhstan.
7) A Big Y for a Polish ancestry man was Y4460+...S2801+ Y8942-. Previously S29801 and Y8942 were considered equivalent. Thanks to this Big Y we have a new I-S29801* branch and a new I-Y8942 branch.
8) A Big Y for a Greek ancestry man was Z17855+ with no further shared SNPs. There are now 7 branches immediately below I-Z17855, three branches are named and 4 branches are I-Z17855*. The I-Z17855 branch is typical of Greece, Bulgaria and Central Europe.
Some previously known variants have been given SNP names, these are shown in red.

Mr Cullen,
ReplyDeletecan you tell me why you are still using the Dinaric North and Dinaric South division?
It seems that the only I2a CTS10228-Y3120 subclade which should be called Dinaric is S17250, and particularly its PH908 branch. The other Y3120 subclades are clearly eastern-Balkanic in origin - I mean, their primary lineages are obviusly there. It also seems that the division "north"-"south" is only valid for S17250-PH908 (south) and S17250 -Y4882, Y5596 (north), according to the area of appearance?!
We use names like Dinaric North, Dinaric South, Isles, Western, Sardinian for several reasons:
ReplyDelete--some people find it easier to remember these names
--these names correspond to clear STR marker patterns
--these names were used for many years, before the discovery of important SNPs like CTS10228 and PH908
Of course not all people called Isles (I-L161) have a paternal origin in the British Isles, and the Dinaric name isn't perfect either. But for some people, these names are convenient: If your main interest is I-CTS10228, you can skip posts about Isles and Western.
We don't try to invent new names for new haplogroup branches, and we don't try explain all geography and history with these short names. Some of the names are clades: for example Isles and Dinaric-South, while some names are merely STR clusters, for example many of the Isles-B, Isles-D groupings and Dinaric-North.
Thank you for your answer.
