You will see two updates highlighted in red:
1) There is a third Big Y for the I-FGC8393 branch, I think they probably all have English paternal ancestry ultimately. Based on two results, YFull calculates that the common ancestor lived 750 years ago. The third result has 15 unique novel variants, which probably means the common ancestor lived even longer ago.
Two of the three results share the A20029 SNP and these two are slightly closer relatives. This SNP is unsuitable for individual testing
2) Until now there was large block of 23 SNPs shared by all members of the "Isles-B1" group. The common ancestor lived 1200 years ago according to YFull's estimate, and known members live in the US, Canada and England.
Now we have a Big Y result for a Swedish-American man. He is derived for 16 of the 23 SNPs, but he is ancestral for 7 others. He has 25 unique novel variants, so he is very distantly related to the English branch.
There are only few known members of I-L161 with paternal origin from outside Great Britain and Ireland (more precisely, the British/Irish haplogroup is I-S2639, which is slightly more specific than I-L161). But when we see I-S2639 men with continental European ancestry, they often are S2703+ S2742+, like the Swedish-American man. (These other European men haven't done Big Y or extensive SNP testing).

i am the big y in 2) whose paternal line is from sweden.
ReplyDeletei believe i have solved the mystery of my ggfather, in the process i found 4 men who ought to have the same y. all 3-4th cousins. all of us descendants from my 3rd great in ysane sweden. one is getting a y37 to disprove the theory. a match really won't "prove" it. but i'll call the mystery solved if we have a y37 gd0 match.
my question is concerning the value of asking any of these guys to do a big y during the next sale cycle?
afaik there are no other potential y matches more distant. we are back to 6th great on paternal line and have carefully done a descendant tree, all y lineages but the one containing the 5 of us is extinct.
Congratulations on the discovery! Personally I would consider any kind of Y37 match with these men to be "proof". You have a rare set of 37 markers and you have the genealogy evidence--so a GD 3 @ 37 would be very strong proof of the genealogy. (A GD 3 @ 37 with a man with no known connection to you would be proof of nothing).
ReplyDeleteIf these guys are American, a Y37 match is not proof of your Swedish paternal ancestry, but maybe you have other evidence to support the Swedish ancestry.
Yes, if you have a Y37 match, I think it's worth asking him to do Big Y at the next sale, this will give you much more evidence of a very recent relationship.
