New branches in Isles-D3/D99 and in the Todd cluster: 2021-03-17 draft tree for I-Y3723

This update shows a new branch in I-S7708, also known as Isles-D3/D99, and a new Big Y sample in an existing branch.

This update also shows a new branch called I-FT99343, it's in I-A10514. We don't have a good nickname for  I-A10514, we sometimes call it the "Todd cluster" after the first I-A10514 family who did Big Ys.

No longer strictly British: 2021-03-16 draft tree for I-A8462

This update shows a branch named I-FT286898, it's immediately below I-A16520. Now FT286898 is the only SNP at its level, and FT286185 and several other SNPs are at a more specific level. Previously all of these samples were considered to be equivalent.

There is now one I-A8462 sample from Continental Europe: a German man with German ancestry, he belongs to an I-A8462* branch, so he's not closely related to any other known I-A8462 man. Unfortunately he's not a member of the I-P37 project, but you can see his German flag on FTDNA's public haplotree (see link below).

Four new branches and three new I-A815* samples: 2021-03-01 tree for I-S17250

Click here to download our 2021-03-01 draft tree for I-S17250

This tree shows four new branches:

  • I-FT67655 (Germany, Czech Republic and another sample has maybe Polish origin)
  • I-FT9248 (Germany and unknown origin)
  • I-Y65151 (northern Serbia and southwestern Romania). This branch is new, we expect FTDNA will add this branch soon
  • I-FT399454  (Germany and Slovakia), part of I-A2423

The new I-FT9248 and I-Y65151 branches are part of I-A815. This update also shows three new I-A815* Big Y samples. I-A815 now has 14 immediate child branches: four named branches which contain multiple samples and ten unnamed I-A815* branches which each contain only one sample. (one of the I-A815* samples isn't a member of the I-P37 project).

Minor new branches in "Disles": 2021-02-18 draft tree for I-L621

Click here to download our 2021-02-18 draft tree for I-L621

This tree shows several updates in the "Disles" branches (Disles is L621+ but CTS10228-).

I-Y81561 is a new branch which contains two American samples, one with southwestern Germany origin and one with Irish or Scottish origin. I-FT48648 contains two closely related samples from southern Sweden, it is the sibling branch of I-Y81561.  The Swedish and German Big Ys were completed in 2020 or earlier but the Irish-American Big Y-700 is recent. This tree also shows additional FT series SNPs shared by all samples (at the I-BY54321 level). FTDNA and YFull's trees are outdated, they don't include the new information from the  Irish-American Big Y-700.

***Update 22 February 2021***FTDNA has added a new branch called I-S12964 for the Irish/Scottish and German samples. Our tree shows this branch as I-Y81561. We didn't include S12964 because it's in the centromere region and the German sample has a small number of reads at this position, we will add it to our next update.

I-BY193188 is a new branch, it contains some members of the Irish-Scottish American Gibson family. This tree also shows additional upstream SNPs in this part of the tree.

CTS4533 is a SNP that occurs high in the tree. We show it provisionally as equivalent to S19848 because kit B173953 has no CTS4533 reads in his Big Y-500 results.

FTDNA has added 177 branches below I-PF4190, we can show only 12 branches on this 2021-01-27 draft tree

Click here to download our 2021-01-27 draft tree for I-PF4190

Over the past few months, FTDNA has added many new branches to their Haplotree and Big Y Block Tree, these branches are based on public genomes: ancient DNA samples, modern scientific samples etc. At the moment only the branches and SNPs are visible, FTDNA doesn't identify the samples. But we can compare the SNPs to public data and identify the source of FTDNA's updates.

In 2013, Paolo Francalacci published his survey:  Low-Pass DNA Sequencing of 1200 Sardinians Reconstructs European Y-Chromosome Phylogeny (2013). Of the 1200 Sardinian men, 465 (37%) belonged to I-M26. Of the 465 I-M26 men, 346 belonged to I-PF4190 (29% of all men in the study, and 74% of the I-M26 men).

So most I-M26 men in Sardinia belong to I-PF4190, and according to trees based on Francalacci's sequencing, I-PF4190 had a rapid population increase starting at its earliest stages.

FTDNA recently updated its haplotree and Big Y Block tree and added approximately 177 branches below I-PF4190. Almost all of the information came from Francalacci's sequences, and maybe a few Simons Genome Diversity Project (HGDP) samples are included. Some of the SNPs have PF prefixes, these were named by Paolo Francalacci, and other SNPs have Z prefixes, these were named by volunteers using Francalacci's and other public sequences.

There are five branches immediately below I-PF4190. There are now 9 Big Y samples in I-PF4190, and the samples belong to 3 of the 5 branches:
  • This update of our draft tree shows a new sample from Libya in the I-Z26452 branch, he is the only Big Y sample in this branch but it contains 34 samples from Francalacci's study. We have displayed some of Francalacci's samples on our draft tree for greater context.
  • The I-PF4295 (I-PF4294) branch contains 5 Big Y samples, 4 have likely German origin and one is from Tunisia, it also contains 231 samples from Francalacci's study.
  • The I-Z26532 (I-Z26527) branch contains 3 Big Y samples (French, Czech and German?) and 23 samples from Francalacci's study.
We don't show the other two branches on our tree because they don't contain any Big Y samples. The I-PF4225 branch contains 32 samples from Francalacci's study and the I-PF4241 branch contains 27 Francalacci samples.
************************************
This update also shows new branches below I-BY67299, this is the Barclay cluster from Scotland/northern England.

The new I-FT406608 branch is specific to some other families from Scotland (Affleck etc).

I-Y160182 is a new branch below I-CTS787, it contains a Danish sample and an American family of unknown origin. I-Y160182 is parallel to the large I-Z125 branch which contains the large I-Z113 branch from Iberia and France. There is also another I-CTS787* sample from England. Thanks to some recent Big Y-700 results we have been able to determine the placement of some SNPs as equivalent to CTS787 or equivalent to Z125.
