Another branch in Isles-B1: 2019-02-20 tree for I-Y14612

This tree shows a new branch based on a Big Y-700 result. Previously A18000, A17999, Z45269/Y51137 and approximately 4 additional SNPs were considered to be equivalent. The new result is A18000+ but ancestral (negative) for the other 6 SNPs. We now have an I-A18000 branch and a more specific I-Z45269 branch.

All of these men belong to the Isles-B1 cluster, which is poorly defined by SNPs and STRs. In my opinion, it's not important to define Isles-B1 exactly, but maybe Isles-B1 is a useful way to refer to these L161+...L1498+ S2703+ S2742+...Y14612+ branches that have similar STRs and that are found in places like England, Sweden and Germany.

First Big Y-700 results: Updated I-CTS10228 Tree

FTDNA has updated the Big Y test: all tests in progress, and all future orders, will be called Big Y-700. The 700 means that more than 700 STR markers will be reported. More importantly, they will use new laboratory methods and sequence new areas of the Y chromosome, and we can expect more novel variants/SNPs to be reported.

The first five Big Y-700 results were completed this week in the I-P37 project and an additional 40 tests are in progress.

This updated I-CTS10228 tree shows two new branches:

  • the I-BY153008 branch is based on two Big Y-500 results. It's part of I-Z17855. One of the Big Y results is for a man with paternal ancestry from Serbia, and the other man's ancestry is unknown
  • the I-BY99606 branch is based on one Big Y-500 result and one Big Y-700 result. It's also part of I-Z17855. FTDNA hasn't named this branch yet, there are approximately three equivalent SNPs and we don't know which name FTDNA will chose. One man has paternal ancestry from Serbia and the other man has paternal ancestry from Macedonia. The Big Y-700 result discovered 10 novel variants that weren't reported in the other man's Big Y-500 result. But probably he is also derived (positive) for most of these 10 variants, and they weren't reported because the Big Y-500 didn't sequence these parts of the Y chromosome.

What we learned about I-Y5451 (Isles-C2) in 2018

I-P37 project member Ryan Casey wrote this summary of recent discoveries about I-Y5451. This is the haplogroup that is sometime nicknamed Isles-C2, it has several distinctive STR marker values, especially DYS392=12. This branch is especially typical of central-western Ireland (counties Roscommon, Galway, Mayo etc.), and it has a MRCA who lived 1150 years ago according to YFull's estimate.

Ryan's summary:

  • 1/26/18: Y43901 is shared by two men and becomes the second known subclade of Y5451 after FGC14463.
  • 2/5/18: FGC14458 separates from the Y5451 SNP block after it becomes known it’s upstream.
  • 6/6/18: FGC14463 is known to have occurred before FGC14449 because a man does BY testing and is positive for the former and negative for the latter, FGC14449 appears to be the SNP that defines the Keaveney surname.
  • 10/15/18: Y128131 and possible equivalent SNP Y129461 are shared between two men and becomes the third known subclade.
  • 11/2/18: BY150381 and equivalent SNP Y45719 are shared between two men and becomes the fourth known subclade.
  • 12/10/18: A subclade of BY150381 called BY186335 is discovered along with its 7 equivalent SNPs and is shared by two closely related men with a Spanish surname

A new branch parallel to I-Z16972: 2019-01-03 tree for I-S17250

In our last update we described a Greek-American man with S17250+ BY128+ Z16971+ Z16972-. Previously, all known Z16971+ men were also Z16972+.

Now there is a new Z16971+ Z16972- man. He has an English surname and he traces his paternal line to the 1700s in America. He shares two additional SNPs with the Greek man: BY183912 and Y159624.

This tree shows the new I-BY183912 branch, it is parallel to I-Z16972.

Another old branch of I-PF6950: 2018-12-29 tree for I-F1295

All known I-PF6950 men belong to the I-PF4419 haplogroup, except for 17 men who were part of Paolo Francalacci's study of 1200 Y chromosomes from Sardinia.

This update shows a new I-PH4419* branch, the person tested has ancestry from Sicily. The I-PH4419 haplogroup had a rapid expansion approximately 2800 years ago, according to YFull's calculation. There are now 7 known immediate descendant branches of I-PH4419, three of these branches share a single additional SNP: PH1671.

One Big Y resolves 26 SNPs and discovers 40 new variants: 2018-12-26 tree for I-L160

This tree shows a third Big Y for the I-BY37343 branch. Previously 25 SNPs were considered to be equivalent to BY37343. Thanks to this Big Y we have learned that only 18 SNPs are equivalent to BY37343. The other 8 SNPs occurred more recently, and they are found in only of the three  I-BY37343 Big Y results.

The three men have paternal ancestry from the colonial USA and Canada: one traces his ancestry to France, one to southern England, and the third has likely English ancestry.

This tree also shows new information about several SNPs in the major I-CTS11851 branch.

A Croatian branch of I-A10033: 2018-12-24 tree for I-L233

Beginning with this update, we have moved our I-A8462 information to a new tree, click here to find it. At this point, all known I-A8462 members have paternal ancestry from Great Britain.

The other members of I-L233 belong to the I-Y4252 branch which is found in Great Britain and in continental Europe. I-Y4252 rapidly expanded into 11 named branches and 8 unnamed branches, as shown on this tree, and probably we will find more branches. All of these branches have been found in Great Britain, which is partly a reflection of the origin of most FTDNA customers.

Only one branch, I-A10033, is largely continental European. One branch of I-A10033 is called I-A10034, and it contains men with ancestry from Denmark, Schleswig-Holstein (Germany), northwestern Germany and the Netherlands. I-A10034 only contains one known man with British origin, he is from Northeastern England which was an area settled by Danes more than 1000 years ago, and he has a family tradition of ancient Danish origin.

This tree shows a second branch of I-A10033, it's called I-Y60701. The two known members have paternal ancestry from modern Croatia: one from the Istria peninsula and one from the hinterland of Dalmatia. They aren't close relatives, based on the number of private variants found in each man, their common ancestor probably lived more than 500 years ago. They aren't close STR matches, they are a Genetic Distance=21 when Y111 markers are compared. One of these Big Ys was funded by the members of the I-P37 project at FTDNA.

This update also shows new branches/SNP information for three families (Auld, Terry, Hawkins). Each of these families are represented by at least 3 Big Y results.
