Preliminary update to I-FT14506 haplotree (dated 2021-10-08)

Click here to download our 2021-10-08 haplotree for I-FT14506 (part of I-PH908 "Dinaric South")

(maybe we will make additional updates to this tree soon)

This update shows a major branch immediately below I-FT14506, it's called I-FTA43907. FTDNA has shown this branch for several months, but it doesn't appear on the YFull tree.

FTA43907 is a deletion, it is ChrY (hg38) 12,416,455 T to del. FTA43907 isn't shown in FTDNA's Big Y chromosome browser. But it can be verified searching for the FT195985 SNP which is in the vicinity. Instructions: login to your FTDNA account and click on Big Y Results. Go to the Named Variants tab, change Derived? to Show All, and enter FT195985 in the SNP name box, and click Return (or similar).

The page will refresh, you will probably see a line "FT195985  No(-) Yes G G". Click on the FT195985, this will open the Y chromosome browser, you will see many green and blue bars which represent individual sequencing runs. Scroll to the right until you see 12,416,455 position. If you have the deletion, you will see gray squares at this position, and you are FTA43907+.

The I-FTA43907 haplogroup is part of the DYS557=17 cluster. I-FTA43907 has three branches according to this draft haplotree: I-FT41224, I-Y56203 and I-Y251275. FTDNA's Big Y Block Tree and haplotree shows only two branches: I-FT41224, I-Y56203. FTDNA also shows one Big Y Participant in an unnamed I-FTA43907* branch.

In fact, this Big Y participant belongs to the I-Y251275 branch. You can see the I-Y251275 branch on YFull's tree (live version, click here). At this time, there is only one sample in YFull's  I-Y251275 branch. This person did his test at Dante Lab, the Big Y participant hasn't sent his results to YFull.

***********
This update also shows a new branch called I-FTA57615 and two samples in unnamed I-A13912* branches.

Click here to download our 2021-04-05 tree for I-FT16449

This update shows several new branches, but none of these branches are immediately below I-FT16449. Some of these branches were discovered several months ago:

  • branches below I-Y103938: the new I-Y232617 branch from eastern Herzegovina (two Dante Lab results) and the I-Y177549 branch (also Dante lab samples)
  • branches below the I-MF2228 haplogroup: I-A873 and more specific I-FT388108 branch (Montenegro and Serbia)
  • new I-FTA37577 haplogroup (Hungary and Bulgaria)
  • new I-FT448972 branch below I-Y151633 (Ukraine and Bosnia and Herzegovina/Croatia)

New Big Y-700 samples in I-L1294 "France" and I-A8689 "Alpine", and ancient DNA samples: 2021-03-27 tree for I-S21825

Click here to download our 2021-03-27 draft tree for I-S21825

I-S21825 contains some of the least common branches in I-P37. All known modern men in I-S21825 belong to one of four branches:

  • I-L1294 "France", this is the group with DYS388=9. Almost all known samples at FTDNA have British/Irish origin, but this group may be more common in France and Spain.
  • I-M838 also known as I-L880 "Northern France" this is a poorly known group with a MRCA who lived 6400 years ago according to YFull's estimate. There are only two Big Y/NGS samples of modern men for this group, both are Big Y-500 samples
  • I-L233 "Western" which has a MRCA who lived 2100 years ago. There are 193 Big Y samples for I-L233
  • I-A8689 "Alpine" also known as I-Y11949, which has a MRCA who lived 2900 years ago. This group is closely related to I-L233
This I-S21825 tree shows details about all of these branches except I-L233, which has several trees of its own.

This update shows a new branch in I-L1294 thanks to a new Big Y-700 sample. There are now 2 Big Y-700 samples and 5 Big Y-500 samples for I-L1294.

There are now 3 Big Y-700 samples and 1 Big Y-500 sample in I-A8689 "Alpine". One of the Big Y-700 tests was completed in December 2020, he has origin from Turkey according to FTDNA's trees. But he isn't a member of the I-P37 project and we have no way to communicate with him. His result didn't add a new branch to the tree, he belongs to an unnamed I-A8689* branch.

As mentioned, I-M838 contains only two modern samples, one with origin in northwestern France and one with origin in Rheinland-Pfalz in Western Germany. But FTDNA and YFull show an ancient DNA I-M838 sample. This is ERS3968402, from a Wartburg culture collective burial also in Rheinland-Pfalz (approximately 5200 years old). See https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/851188v1  The common ancestor of ERS3968402 and the German Big Y-500 sample lived approximately 5700 years ago, they form the new I-BY73844 branch. We will try to organize Big Y-700 tests for more members of I-M838.

This update also shows major new branches named I-FT344596 and I-FT344600. These are based on ancient DNA samples from Ireland and Sweden as shown on the YFull and FTDNA trees. See https://www.yfull.com/samples-from-paper/443/ and https://www.yfull.com/samples-from-paper/388/

There are several additional ancient DNA samples/branches that are shown on FTDNA and YFull's tree, see links below

Many new branches: 2021-03-27 draft tree for I-Y4882

Click here to download our 2021-03-27 draft tree for I-Y4882

Our last draft tree update was in March 2021, and this new tree shows many new branches, but some were discovered several months ago. Here are all the new branches on this updated tree:

  • I-Y46518 is included in FTDNA's trees but it's based on only one Big Y Participant. We aren't aware of any other I-Y46518 samples. FTDNA added this branch in January 2021
  • I-FT156638 was discovered in January 2021
  • I-FGC30465 was discovered in July 2020
  • I-FT59351 was discovered in November 2020
  • I-Y40408 contains three samples: one Big Y-700 sample (Poland), one Big Y-500 sample (Serbia), and one Dante Lab sample (Poland). This branch doesn't currently appear on the FTDNA tree, I expect FTDNA will add I-Y40408 soon.
  • I-FT114748 is below I-Y40408. The Big Y-700 sample (Poland) and the Big Y-500 sample (Serbia) share FT114748 and two other SNPs, the Dante Lab sample (Poland) apparently has negative results for these SNPs. All three men have ordered the YFull analysis, and YFull might add I-FT114748 at a future update.
  • I-FT109194 (samples from Bulgaria and Montenegro, both Big Y-700) was discovered in January 2021, it's part of I-FT109380 which also includes a Big Y-700 sample and a Dante Lab sample (both from BiH)
  • I-FT26700 was discovered in July 2020, it has two Big Y-700 samples, they aren't I-P37 Project members, one has origin from Slovakia and the other doesn't list his origin

I-Z16973 is an important new level below I-Y3106: 2021-03-25 tree for I-Y4460

Click here to download our 2021-03-25 draft tree for I-Y4460

Update 2021-03-28: We communicated with YFull, and YFull will add this level to their tree. Click here to see the live version of the YFull I-Y3106 tree.

Our updated I-Y4460 draft tree shows a new level called I-Z16973, it's immediately below I-Y3106.

Four branches of  I-Y3106 have Z16973+ results:

  • I-Y3118
  • I-FT10545
  • I-FT78951
  • I-Y47356
Three branches of I-Y3106 have Z16973- results:
  • I-A6106
  • I-S8201
  • I-BY53671
Z16973 occurs in the DYZ19 repeat region, and maybe FTDNA won't add it to its tree. But Z16973 gives consistent results.

Click here to download our 2021-03-17 draft tree for I-Y3723

This update shows a new branch in I-S7708, also known as Isles-D3/D99, and a new Big Y sample in an existing branch.

This update also shows a new branch called I-FT99343, it's in I-A10514. We don't have a good nickname for  I-A10514, we sometimes call it the "Todd cluster" after the first I-A10514 family who did Big Ys.

No longer strictly British: 2021-03-16 draft tree for I-A8462

Click here to download our 2021-03-16 draft tree for I-A8462

This update shows a branch named I-FT286898, it's immediately below I-A16520. Now FT286898 is the only SNP at its level, and FT286185 and several other SNPs are at a more specific level. Previously all of these samples were considered to be equivalent.

There is now one I-A8462 sample from Continental Europe: a German man with German ancestry, he belongs to an I-A8462* branch, so he's not closely related to any other known I-A8462 man. Unfortunately he's not a member of the I-P37 project, but you can see his German flag on FTDNA's public haplotree (see link below).

Four new branches and three new I-A815* samples: 2021-03-01 tree for I-S17250

Click here to download our 2021-03-01 draft tree for I-S17250

This tree shows four new branches:

  • I-FT67655 (Germany, Czech Republic and another sample has maybe Polish origin)
  • I-FT9248 (Germany and unknown origin)
  • I-Y65151 (northern Serbia and southwestern Romania). This branch is new, we expect FTDNA will add this branch soon
  • I-FT399454  (Germany and Slovakia), part of I-A2423

The new I-FT9248 and I-Y65151 branches are part of I-A815. This update also shows three new I-A815* Big Y samples. I-A815 now has 14 immediate child branches: four named branches which contain multiple samples and ten unnamed I-A815* branches which each contain only one sample. (one of the I-A815* samples isn't a member of the I-P37 project).

Minor new branches in "Disles": 2021-02-18 draft tree for I-L621

Click here to download our 2021-02-18 draft tree for I-L621

This tree shows several updates in the "Disles" branches (Disles is L621+ but CTS10228-).

I-Y81561 is a new branch which contains two American samples, one with southwestern Germany origin and one with Irish or Scottish origin. I-FT48648 contains two closely related samples from southern Sweden, it is the sibling branch of I-Y81561.  The Swedish and German Big Ys were completed in 2020 or earlier but the Irish-American Big Y-700 is recent. This tree also shows additional FT series SNPs shared by all samples (at the I-BY54321 level). FTDNA and YFull's trees are outdated, they don't include the new information from the  Irish-American Big Y-700.

***Update 22 February 2021***FTDNA has added a new branch called I-S12964 for the Irish/Scottish and German samples. Our tree shows this branch as I-Y81561. We didn't include S12964 because it's in the centromere region and the German sample has a small number of reads at this position, we will add it to our next update.

I-BY193188 is a new branch, it contains some members of the Irish-Scottish American Gibson family. This tree also shows additional upstream SNPs in this part of the tree.

CTS4533 is a SNP that occurs high in the tree. We show it provisionally as equivalent to S19848 because kit B173953 has no CTS4533 reads in his Big Y-500 results.

FTDNA has added 177 branches below I-PF4190, we can show only 12 branches on this 2021-01-27 draft tree

Click here to download our 2021-01-27 draft tree for I-PF4190

Over the past few months, FTDNA has added many new branches to their Haplotree and Big Y Block Tree, these branches are based on public genomes: ancient DNA samples, modern scientific samples etc. At the moment only the branches and SNPs are visible, FTDNA doesn't identify the samples. But we can compare the SNPs to public data and identify the source of FTDNA's updates.

In 2013, Paolo Francalacci published his survey:  Low-Pass DNA Sequencing of 1200 Sardinians Reconstructs European Y-Chromosome Phylogeny (2013). Of the 1200 Sardinian men, 465 (37%) belonged to I-M26. Of the 465 I-M26 men, 346 belonged to I-PF4190 (29% of all men in the study, and 74% of the I-M26 men).

So most I-M26 men in Sardinia belong to I-PF4190, and according to trees based on Francalacci's sequencing, I-PF4190 had a rapid population increase starting at its earliest stages.

FTDNA recently updated its haplotree and Big Y Block tree and added approximately 177 branches below I-PF4190. Almost all of the information came from Francalacci's sequences, and maybe a few Simons Genome Diversity Project (HGDP) samples are included. Some of the SNPs have PF prefixes, these were named by Paolo Francalacci, and other SNPs have Z prefixes, these were named by volunteers using Francalacci's and other public sequences.

There are five branches immediately below I-PF4190. There are now 9 Big Y samples in I-PF4190, and the samples belong to 3 of the 5 branches:
  • This update of our draft tree shows a new sample from Libya in the I-Z26452 branch, he is the only Big Y sample in this branch but it contains 34 samples from Francalacci's study. We have displayed some of Francalacci's samples on our draft tree for greater context.
  • The I-PF4295 (I-PF4294) branch contains 5 Big Y samples, 4 have likely German origin and one is from Tunisia, it also contains 231 samples from Francalacci's study.
  • The I-Z26532 (I-Z26527) branch contains 3 Big Y samples (French, Czech and German?) and 23 samples from Francalacci's study.
We don't show the other two branches on our tree because they don't contain any Big Y samples. The I-PF4225 branch contains 32 samples from Francalacci's study and the I-PF4241 branch contains 27 Francalacci samples.
************************************
This update also shows new branches below I-BY67299, this is the Barclay cluster from Scotland/northern England.

The new I-FT406608 branch is specific to some other families from Scotland (Affleck etc).

I-Y160182 is a new branch below I-CTS787, it contains a Danish sample and an American family of unknown origin. I-Y160182 is parallel to the large I-Z125 branch which contains the large I-Z113 branch from Iberia and France. There is also another I-CTS787* sample from England. Thanks to some recent Big Y-700 results we have been able to determine the placement of some SNPs as equivalent to CTS787 or equivalent to Z125.

Our first draft tree specific to I-FT14506 (part of I-PH908 "Dinaric South")

Click here to download our 2021-01-26 draft tree for I-FT14506

As mentioned in a recent post, I-PH908 (Dinaric South) can be divided into two clusters based on the STR marker DYS561.

Almost all I-PH908 men who have the DYS561=16 value belong to the large I-FT14506 and I-FT16449 branches. We moved I-FT16449 into its own tree several months ago, and now we have created a new tree specific to I-FT14506.

This update shows a new branch:

  • I-FT271768 Apulia (Italy) and Serbia?
The following branches are also shown in red, but they were included in earlier trees. Here are some more details about these branches:
  • I-BY189748 is the parent of I-BY190900. This is based on individual SNP tests at YSeq.net: a BY189748+ man from Serbia is BY190900-, therefore these SNPs aren't equivalent. I-BY189748 also includes samples from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
  • I-BY186407 contains samples from Bulgaria and Montenegro.

Many new branches in DYS561=15 cluster: 2021-01-25 draft tree for I-PH908

Click here to download our 2021-01-25 draft tree for I-PH908

I-PH908 (Dinaric South) can be divided into two clusters based on the STR marker DYS561. This marker is part of the Y68-Y111 marker set at FTDNA. Some I-PH908 men have DYS561=16 which is the typical value for Dinaric as a whole. Almost all of these men belong to the large I-FT14506 and I-FT16449 branches which are especially typical of the former Yugoslavia and adjacent areas, but also Russia, Poland etc. Other I-PH908 men have DYS561=15, and these men belong to several different branches, some of which are found in Central Europe, Germany etc. as well as the former Yugoslavia. Of course there is much geographic overlap: both clusters can be found in all parts of Southeastern Europe, Central Europe and Eastern Europe.

In the DYS561=16 cluster, we have created a new draft tree specifically for the large I-FT14506 branch. I will post a link to this tree soon. The large I-FT16449 branch already has its own draft haplotree, click here to find our latest version.

Our I-PH908 tree now focuses on the DYS561=15 cluster. This update shows several new branches in this cluster:

  • I-FT69508 (Montenegro and "Yugoslavia") is a new branch below I-Z16983
  • I-Y111673 (Finland and Germany?) is a new branch below I-Z16983
  • this update shows some new branches below I-A5913, these branches are based on individual SNP testing at YSeq.net
  • I-BY198275 is immediately below I-PH908, its the parent of two branches. The new I-BY198275 branch contains samples from the Czech Republic and Poland. The I-BY200456 branch contains sample with Bosnia and Herzegovia and unknown origin. BY200456 is equivalent to another SNP called P41.2/M359.2. This SNP has been known for many years and some scientific samples are P41.2/M359.2+. The FTDNA haplotree doesn't include P41.2/M359.2, and the YFull tree doesn't include any of these SNPs currently
  • I-BY93199 (Montenegro) is directly below I-PH908
  • I-FT275645 (Croatia and Serbia) is directly below I-PH908
  • I-FT277965 is directly below I-PH908. It contains a Big Y-700 sample from Macedonia (Albanian ancestry) and two scientific samples from Sardinia (P. Francalacci's 2013 study). The Sardinian samples belong to the more specific I-YP206 haplogroup

Our first draft tree for I-A7111 (part of I-L233)

Click here to download our 2021-01-09 draft tree for I-A7111

For reasons of space we have created a new tree that's specific to I-A7111.

I-A7111 is part of I-L233 "Western". I-A7111 contains the I-Y54081 (I-BY33207) branch that's found in Central Europe, and several small branches that have been found only in Great Britain.

I-A7111 also contains the I-BY63871 branch which is nicknamed "Western-Isles" because all samples seem to have origin from the British Isles, mostly England. I-BY63871 can be identified by the distinctive marker values DYS389=13-29 and Y-GATA-H4=9. This branch has a MRCA who lived 1050 years ago according to YFull's calculation, but it contains men with dozens of different surnames.

This tree shows some minor new branches and samples, indicated in red.
